We have seen in the earlier article on this blog regarding the common fears of Laser Eye surgery and how these could be tackled. Confusion or doubts still left unanswered could be easily clarified during a one- on- one consultation.

Let’s delve into some aspects on what could be discouraging you or holding you back from undergoing the laser eye procedure. This could be just one major reason or even a combination of many.

  • Fears before and during surgery: Some people have a great fear of pain that they think they will experience during the surgery. Some may even find it difficult to remain still, then fearing an adverse outcome caused due to their head or eye movement during the procedure! When one has not taken steps to learn what can be done for these issues, then the fear lingers on and one may even miss the opportunity of the great benefits that a laser eye surgery may have for them.
  • Fear post surgery of certain complications: Some are fearful of going blind. Clear understanding and confidence on the latest treatment and with your surgeon, helps you to build trust in the procedure and its outcomes. It was in early 80s that the Laser Eye surgery was first developed and further innovation and advancement value added to achieve the latest techniques we have today. The laser beam does not even enter the eyeball. The vision or sight giving apparatus is located deep within. Hence, this fear of going blind is close to not possible.
  • Choice of LASIK centre and doctor: Unable to locate right hospital or find right doctor may hold you back from treatment. Yes, this is an important aspect as you will need an experienced surgeon and also one who has the best of your interests in mind.
  • Doubts on quality of the treatment: Finding the ‘right’ hospital should not leave any room for doubts on the quality of treatment which is non – negotiable. You need to ensure if you are the right candidate for the surgery and be aware of the associated risks if any.
  • The cost factor: The cost factor could be one of the major reasons holding you back. Some feel it is too costly even without any enquiry. Ask for alternate options and beware the cheapest may not be the best. The mode of payment most suitable could be worked out.

How to overcome ‘fear of having laser eye surgery’?

  • Open discussion with the surgeon and counsellor.
  • Read and understand more on the surgery benefits, risks etc.
  • Clear the doubts and gain better understanding.
  • Testimonies of patients already undergone the surgery. Ask the centre to share contacts of patients who are willing to discuss their experience
  • Discuss and clear doubts on the costing.

Reassurance instills confidence. Having better understanding, preparedness and openness with your surgeon during consultation helps you to overcome your fears and face it. In case you are not a good candidate for Laser Eye surgery you would be informed and alternatives would be suggested. This could subsequently help you to take a decision accordingly. Symptoms after LASIK laser eye surgery

Normal symptoms you may experience after LASIK laser eye surgery

LASIK is performed in order to correct refractive errors or spectacle powers. Most people opt for LASIK with an intention to discontinue contact lenses or free themselves from spectacles.  Many choose this procedure when they start having trouble with their lenses, or are fed up of glasses, having faced some situation which motivates them to consider a permanent laser eye treatment.

As you already know LASIK is generally considered to be a very safe and hassle- free procedure; however you should expect a few symptoms after the procedure, which are common. Recovery time varies from patient to patient and also depends on the type of LASIK performed.  Most of the symptoms are self limiting and settle down as you heal with time. Those which linger are treatable.

Listed here a Few commonly faced symptoms after LASIK  laser eye surgery:

  • Experiencing sight discomfort in the first few hours (24-48) is normal and is a part of the post operative healing process.
  • Mild irritation- Mild irritation or watery eyes on the day of procedure is expected and eye drops are administered for soothing the symptoms.
  • Heaviness of the head- this settles down on the day of procedure. However, due to the wetness of the eye drops, in some due to anxiety, the heaviness can linger in the first week. A simple pain killer eases this symptom.
  • Light sensitivity – Temporary light sensitivity is normal and expected to subside within a day.
  • Vision fluctuation or focusing problems – Some patients may experience these during the first few weeks after LASIK. This settles down with time.
  • Dry eye is a commonly reported symptom after LASIK. Most often this settles down in few weeks and only needs simple over the counter available lubricating or moisturizing eye drops to control the symptoms. This is not to be confused with the permanent dry eye that you read online.
  • Glare /halos/ double vision – Due to these night time vision gets affected. This also is a part of healing and temporary. This is not to be confused with the permanent night vision issues that you read online.

The above discussion is an idea of the symptoms that may occur normally.

In case you have increasing discomfort or pain you must report to your doctor             immediately. A delay in reporting could even worsen the condition and affect vision.             Usually depending on the type of surgery opted, with time the symptoms diminish.

Points to note:

  • Avoid rubbing the eyes as rubbing could dislocate the corneal flap or could lead to other flap related complications like flap wrinkling.
  • Use medication in time and with correct method.
  • Avoid eye makeup, dusty areas etc to avoid any risk of infection.
  • Discuss any worrisome symptoms with your doctor.
  • Avoid driving by oneself immediately after surgery and wait till vision is stable.
  • Post operative visits and follow up needs to be followed.

Have you been told LASIK is not for you?

LASIK reshapes the cornea for refractive correction in various degrees of Myopia (nearsightedness), Astigmatism and Hyperopia (far-sightedness) using  Excimer laser.

It is quite possible sometimes you may be told that you are not suitable for LASIK although you are willing and wish to opt for it.

The possible reasons to opt out of LASIK:

  • Age: If you are under 18, LASIK cannot be undertaken as no lasers are approved (according to FDA guidelines) for LASIK below 18 as refractive errors are required to stabilize and as you may be still growing anatomically, there is a likelihood that you powers may also change.
  • Active contact sports participant: Contact Sports like boxing, martial arts could interfere in LASIK treatment as probability of eye injury occurrence is higher. In LASIK, one needs to take what is termed “corneal flap” which is needed to be lifted (similar to lifting a page of the book). There is a chance that this flap shifts or moves out of its place during an injury. Hence, LASIK is also disallowed in the Indian Army and Navy.
  • Refractive instability: In case you have been experiencing a frequent change in prescription of either your contact lenses or glass prescription within the past one year then LASIK may not get you the desired results, as powers may not be stable.
  • Medications: Certain medications like retinoic acid and steroids taken in the long term can change your powers post LASIK and hence interfere in LASIK results. Some such medications can cause fluctuations in vision.
  • Diseases and other conditions: Certain diseases delay wound healing like uncontrolled diabetes, immune compromised conditions etc. Other conditions like Pregnancy, nursing or child birth could be unsuitable for LASIK as hormones could distort prescription stability. Even previous eye injury could be an impediment for LASIK.
  • Size of measurement of pupil: Large pupils could have side effects like glare, halos etc.
  • Dry eyes: Those who have been treated for Dry eyes or having extreme dry eye symptoms prior to LASIK, there are chances it could worsen.
  • Thin/Irregular corneas: A certain corneal thickness is required for LASIK depending on your prescription.
  • Corneal abnormalities: Unsuitable for LASIK In case of presence of corneal abnormalities like scarring, Keratoconus.
  • Other factors: Refractive surgeries could also be a disqualification for certain professions.

So, not just eye health, overall health matters.
